Harmonized Chemical Data Across Systems

Our client, a multinational pharmaceutical company needed help improving how they manage and align chemical master data. Although SAP served as the main master data system, other departments used separate tools and models, creating a need for alignment.

What was the goal?

Establish a harmonized taxonomy

The aim was to create a harmonized taxonomy for chemicals and molecules across all abstraction levels. From generic substances to formulations. From formulations to finished compounds.

It was also important to achieve this without disrupting existing workflows.

What was getting in the way?

Lack of Alignment hindered efficiency

The client faced growing challenges in managing chemical master data across multiple departments.

While SAP functioned as the primary system, other teams used separate tools and models. This eroded trust in the data and also made onboarding new chemicals an inefficient, manual process.

Inconsistent naming, duplicates and missing relationships

Reduced data quality and trust

Manual cleansing and reconciliation

Slow onboarding of new chemicals & molecules

How was it addressed?

structure & shared ownership

By using inorigo® the client’s team was able to consolidate their organization’s data and model a comprehensive and sustainable taxonomy for chemicals and molecules.

Collaborative governance with business ownership for naming rules, uniqueness checks, and attribute completeness was established.

By implementing a validation layer before master data updates uniqueness, correctness, and compliance was ensured.

What was the result?

Consistent chemical data across the system landscape

The harmonization that was made possible by inorigo®, meant that the client could increase their data quality and efficiency.

Reducing the time to process new chemicals and molecules and being able to map chemical master data to downstream systems (LIMS, procurement) without forcing any changes to their current IT systems.

What was the impact?

Increased Compliance efficiency & trust

By harmonizing chemical data across systems and establishing a process, the client has been able to empower decisions and stronger purchasing leverage.

Increased GxP compliance

Higher data quality—duplicates and inconsistencies prevented at source

Faster onboarding of new chemicals with automated validation

Reduced data cleansing effort and improved ability to
leverage enterprise purchasing power for chemicals
